Yes, You Can Buy Happiness! (In Praise of Botox)

Some references are linked below. This is a quick article about a scientific/medical/biological phenomenon that I wish more people knew about. Maybe it will help you! or someone you know.
Some time around when my son turned 2, I was obliged to turn into The Monster Who Says No. This happens to most parents at some point, I think. We can't let them do everything. And we can't let them do nothing, either. Life becomes a balancing act.
And so I got a furrow between my brows.
About ten years and many worries later, that furrow was even more entrenched.  I didn't like it, and decided to fix it.
In my vanity, I discovered an excellent medical secret.
Botox kills headaches.
Also, you just can't feel as worried when the muscles in your brow refuse to furrow.
I did not learn this secret by reading about it. I was surprised to simply start experiencing it. Then I started to research it and learned that it's a well-known effect:
Botox makes you happier.
If you can't frown, you can't stay unhappy. That's biology.
Ever get migraines? Botox is cheaper than migraine medication, if you've ever had to use that (I have -- about $20/pill, but faced with losing days/being hospitalized, that seems worth it).
Cost of Botox : $300 the first time, and $200 the second time (+a pleasant 10 minutes with a well-groomed doctor... it is worth it to check around for referrals to someone good). I went in May and went again now, about 8 months later. Your mileage will vary, of course, depending how furrowed you are and how much you can regulate your stress in the mean time.
Stress is no good for your health.
An overdose of cortisol, the stress hormone, makes you fatter and does a hundred other bad things to you. The way we operate our lives on high stress these days (driving, putting too many things in a 24 hour day, too much screen time, and not enough sleep), it's like over-revving your motor until your system is completely exhausted. A total waste of gas.  It also erodes the synapses in your brain, resulting in adult-onset ADD and predisposing you to Alzheimers. So you can see the benefits of reducing cortisol coursing through your blood!
Your body will produce less cortisol if your frown muscles don't frown.
I believed I could calm that brow furrow with meditation and a clean diet -- I still do believe that's possible, if a person could control the circumstances of their life enough (retire and head off to a quiet location, if that's what you want, for example). But if you can't zone out on the world, give yourself a leg up with some Botox paralysis of your frowny muscles. Then keep working on the meditation, the choosing-to-be-happy-despite-circumstances, and other de-stressing measures.
If your experience is anything like mine, you'll be so glad you did.

Don't take my word for it! This effect is well-known. Here is an article from Psychology Today and one from Time magazine.
